January
- Coping with the Cold
January
is the coldest month in most states. But one great benefit of Active Transportation is how quickly you'll warm up once you get moving! The right bicycle accessories and apparel can make a huge difference in your comfort and safety during a cold weather commute.
Cold
Weather Tips -
- Wear several
layers of loose-fitting, thin clothing
that trap body heat and wick moisture
away from the body. You can take off layers as you warm up during the ride.
- Layers and wicking materials will help you achieve adequate insulation
without sweat accumulation next to the
skin.
- Wear tights or warmers
help keep legs warm.
- Wear gloves or mittens
to protect hands.
- Wear a wool or synthetic
cap (most heat loss occurs through the
head). Wear a cap under your helmet for extra warmth when you're bicycling.
- Drink as much water as you would if you were exercising in
hot weather - you still lose water both through sweating and
mouth-breathing,
and cold environments are often especially dry.
- See the City of Toronto bicycling page for more great tips and information about cold-weather cycling.
