March
- Staying Dry
Tips
on Rain Riding
- Apply brakes
and make turns slowly. Keep your weight
on the outside pedal while turning.
- Allow for a greater
stopping distance, as water on the rims
of your tires will make braking more difficult.
- Before you need to stop, apply
the brakes lightly to clean off the rims.
- Metal grates, painted
surfaces and leaves can be very slippery, especially during the first few minutes of rain.
- Avoid puddles that
could be covering deep potholes.
- Use front and rear
fenders to help keep you dry.
- Clean and lubricate chains after
a wet ride to replace the lubricant that
washed off and avoid rust.
Wet
Weather Clothing
- Wear bright or reflective
clothing so you can be seen more easily
by motorists.
- Wear protective glasses with yellow or clear lenses for optimal
visibility.
- Water resistant fabrics
work well in light rain, but
you will need waterproof fabrics to stay
dry in heavy rain.
- Wear a breathable,
waterproof jacket with a hood and breathable
layers next to your skin. The jacket's
hood should fit under your helmet. Underarm
zippers allow for ventilation without
letting in rain. The back of the jacket
should be longer to keep your back dry.
- Waterproof and breathable
material is also best for pants, and waterproof
socks or booties can help keep feet dry.
