Commuter Choice

Commuter choice is an initiative encouraging cooperation between businesses, government and communities. The voluntary initiative encourages employers to offer employees a wider range of commuting options, thereby promoting alternatives to driving alone during peak periods.

Commuter choice was initiated by the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency to address the growth-related transportation issues many areas in the United States are experiencing.

The initiative is targeted at employers because "employee travel behavior can be influenced most effectively through employer actions" (Commuter Choice Primer).

The Commuter Choice Primer: An Employer's Guide to Implementing Effective Commuter Choice Programs is a publication by the Federal Highway Administration. The guide introduces the initiative and its purpose, and describes the various choices employers are encouraged to provide, which include allowing for the variation of the mode, time, location and route of the daily commute to work.
