Simply defined, Active Transportation
includes any method of travel that is human-powered, but most commonly refers to walking and bicycling. The goal of this website and campaign is to provide the resources, suggestions and information you need to make Active Transportation a regular part of your day.
This initiative comes partly in response to the increasingly sedentary lifestyles Americans are leading, and more importantly, to the resulting health and quality of life issues. Using
active modes of transportation like walking and bicycling can
help you become more active
and fulfill the recommended activity levels for weight loss, maintenance or health benefits (See Key Recommendations from the 2005 Dietary Guidelines).
Statistics show that only a quarter of Americans currently
achieve the recommended physical activity
levels, while about half accumulate
some activity, but not enough to reap health benefits. The remaining 25 percent are completely inactive (CDC). Walking or bicycling for transportation
is one convenient way to work in daily
physical activity.
Check out the Walking and Bicycling sections for more information, including benefits, statistics, ideas for community change and how to incorporate these activities into your daily routine.
